Project Overview

Conventional hair straighteners clamp the hair between two heated plates, while ordinary heated brushes can be bulky and difficult to control near the roots. The objective of this project was to develop a compact hair-ironing comb that could straighten and smooth individual sections of hair through a familiar combing action.

InDesignLabs designed a corded handheld appliance combining an elongated heating barrel, a single row of comb teeth and an ergonomic powered handle. The product allows hair to pass between the teeth while controlled heat helps align and smooth the strands.

The Design Challenge

The central challenge was integrating heat, grooming and electrical components into a slim handheld device without compromising safety or usability.

The design needed to:

  • Separate and guide hair consistently through the heated area.
  • Prevent direct contact between the hot barrel and the scalp.
  • Keep heat away from the user’s hand.
  • Provide a secure grip during slow, controlled combing movements.
  • Position the switch and indicator where they remain visible and accessible.
  • Protect the electrical cord against repeated bending.
  • Accommodate internal heating and electrical components.
  • Use enclosure components suitable for injection moulding and assembly.

The product also needed to look like a professional beauty appliance rather than a conventional plastic comb with a heating element added to it.

Product Architecture

The appliance is divided into three primary functional zones:

  1. Heated grooming head
    A long cylindrical head contains the heating assembly and provides an extended working surface for straightening sections of hair.
  2. Protective comb structure
    A single row of long comb teeth separates the hair and guides it along the heating barrel. The tooth length creates a physical stand-off between the hot internal structure and the user’s scalp.
  3. Ergonomic powered handle
    The handle houses the electrical components, switch and indicator while providing a stable gripping surface for controlled styling.

A cord with a reinforced strain-relief section exits from the base of the handle, allowing continuous electrical power without increasing the size or weight of the appliance with an internal battery.

Heated Comb Development

The grooming head was designed to allow hair strands to pass partially between the teeth while remaining exposed to the heated barrel. This arrangement combines the directional control of a comb with the smoothing effect of a heated styling appliance.

The spacing, length and alignment of the teeth were developed to:

  • Separate manageable sections of hair.
  • Maintain consistent contact with the heated region.
  • Prevent the hair from bunching around the barrel.
  • Reduce the likelihood of the hot structure touching the scalp.
  • Support a smooth downward styling motion.

Black retaining rings divide and support the cylindrical head while giving the elongated assembly greater visual and structural definition.

Thermal and Safety Considerations

The heating assembly is separated from the main handle by an insulating collar. This transition helps reduce heat transfer toward the user’s hand and clearly communicates the boundary between the hot working area and the gripping zone.

The semi-transparent outer structure visually exposes the internal heating architecture while remaining enclosed by the surrounding support components. The long comb teeth act as an additional protective barrier during use.

The product architecture was developed with consideration for:

  • Thermal isolation between the head and handle.
  • Heat-resistant materials around the heating assembly.
  • Electrical insulation and internal wire routing.
  • Temperature-control and thermal-cutoff provisions.
  • Safe spacing between powered components and external surfaces.
  • Controlled ventilation around the heated region.

No specific temperature or safety certification is claimed without physical testing and regulatory validation.

Ergonomic Handle Design

The tapered red handle follows the natural closing shape of the hand. Its broader central section supports the palm, while the narrower ends help prevent the product from slipping during a downward combing movement.

Dark textured grip pads provide additional control and visually identify the intended holding area. The rocker switch is positioned for easy access while remaining slightly recessed to reduce accidental operation. A small indicator light gives the user immediate visual feedback when the appliance is powered.

The handle geometry also keeps the user’s fingers away from the heated head and allows the appliance to be rotated slightly when working on different sections of hair.

Cord Integration

Because the comb requires sustained heating, a corded configuration provides continuous power without the added bulk, charging time and thermal limitations of a battery.

A ribbed strain-relief component at the base protects the cable from repeated bending where it enters the enclosure. The cord exit is aligned with the handle’s main axis so that cable forces do not twist the appliance during use.

Materials and Manufacturing

The enclosure was developed around injection-moulded plastic components with practical wall thicknesses, internal ribs, locating features and fastening provisions.

Material and manufacturing considerations included:

  • Heat-resistant engineering plastics near the heating head.
  • Electrically insulating materials for the handle.
  • Glossy moulded red exterior surfaces.
  • Textured grip inserts or overmoulded elastomeric pads.
  • Heat-resistant comb teeth with rounded contact edges.
  • Simplified component assembly and service access.
  • Controlled parting lines and reduced undercuts.
  • Secure cable anchoring inside the enclosure.

The deep-red, black and grey colour scheme gives the product a professional beauty-appliance identity while clearly separating the hot, control and gripping areas.

Final Outcome

The final concept combines the familiarity of a comb with the controlled heat of a hair-straightening appliance. Its elongated heated head, protective tooth geometry, ergonomic handle and continuous corded power are integrated into one coherent product architecture.

The design demonstrates how industrial design, ergonomics, thermal management, electrical packaging and injection-moulding requirements can be combined to create a compact and commercially credible personal-care appliance.
